Why We Celebrate International Dance Day at OC DanceFit

At OC DanceFit, dance isn’t just something we do — it’s something we live. That’s why every year on April 29, we join the global celebration of International Dance Day — a day that honors the incredible power of dance to inspire, connect, and transform lives.

This special day was created in 1982 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI), with the support of UNESCO. April 29 was chosen to honor Jean-Georges Noverre, the 18th-century French choreographer considered the father of modern ballet. His belief that dance should express emotion and tell stories echoes everything we strive to do at OC DanceFit.

For me personally, International Dance Day holds a special place in my heart.

It was April 29, 2000, when my ballet teacher, Mónica Pizano, took me to the National Center of the Arts to celebrate International Dance Day. I was completely captivated — chills ran through my body as I watched breathtaking performances in jazz, hip hop, ballet, modern, Bollywood, and more. Each style moved me deeply, and in that moment, I knew I wanted to be part of that world. That same day, I picked up the application for the National Dance School — and the rest is history. I’ll always be grateful to Mónica for opening that door and guiding me toward my passion.

At OC DanceFit, we see stories like this come to life every day — in the joy of a child discovering their rhythm, in a teen finding confidence on the dance floor, and in adults reconnecting with movement as a form of joy and healing. We celebrate all styles, all backgrounds, and all dancers.

International Dance Day is a reminder that dance is a global language — one that invites everyone to move, express, and connect.

So today, we celebrate not just the art of dance, but the journey it creates — from spark to spotlight, from studio to soul.

Let’s keep dancing, sharing, and lifting each other up — today and every day.

Happy International Dance Day!
